I should note that I rated it as a super jumbo. But would I be willing to pay a lot for it? No.

I would have liked one more selection...'The senseless destruction of 8 stamps to satisfy one irrational buyer'.

When deciding if a stamp is a jumbo, there seems to be two different criteria. If the stamp is perforated, the margins must be larger than the average stamp. Since the size of stamps can vary, the larger stamps are judged jumbo.This is a difference based on how the post office produced the stamp.

But with imperforate stamps, it is simply how a person cut the stamp.

What is not taken into account is the fact that in older stamps, not all the stamps were evenly spaced. If "jumbo" were treated the same for imperofate and perforated stamps, ie larger margins because of production irregularities, this nonsense would stop.

I was thinking..., a dealer/collector in 1928 has an envelope stamped, postmarked and flown on a Zeppelin, that cover is given the label "philatelic".

A dealer/collector purposely trims a block down to one stamp and is rewarded with top grades...



Shouldn't the stamp above be labeled "philatelic" and given "no grade"?

I would call it a philatelic creation.

An artificial item created after the fact without any basis in postal usage.

I object to this is being held up as an example of 100 Jumbo as it distorts the standard.

It used to be a philatelic convention that imperforate stamps were collected at least in pairs in order to show an imperforate connection between the stamps with full blocks and multiples being even more preferred. Now we have these single stamps that are trying to change this by taking what I would consider a mutilating and damaging short cut out of all of the other surrounding stamps in defiance of the aforementioned philatelic convention. Are philatelic show judges now highly rewarding those that exhibit these kind of stamps that destroy all of their surrounding stamps as a legitimate and award worthy exhibition item?
