ikeyPikey, I believe crayoned. I wonder if the open book symbol is some sort of library reference.

Back in the day, people would often put a label in their books.

If you had the money, you'd have a printer print your name.

If you did not have the money, or had a nice hand, you bought the blank labels, and wrote it yourself.

If you conformed to a certain religious tradition, you inscribed your books, by hand or by label, with a statement that they were consigned to the public domain (eg, available for borrowing by pretty much anyone who asked), and you got to count the cost of the book(s) towards your tithe.
