Old Chaps Collection Galleon Book

Hi all I have had a go but failed to post any pictures sorry I was looking on ebay and yes I know things are only worth what some one would pay but however I came across a 1cent Ben Franklin stamp with a price tag of £30 k ? I have one and some others with Franklin on in the galleon stamp book are stamps worth that much if so this stamp book must be valuable I think I need to try and get my head around posting pictures so you can help me

This is a common mistake, you are making the wrong assumption. It is like running across some lottery tickets and assuming that one of them is a big winner.

First, ebay listings are often misidentified and a 'listing' means noting; people can ask whatever they want. Do not look at for sale listings but instead filter for 'sold' items on ebay.

Secondly and more importantly, there were literality billions of the 1 cent Franklin stamp printed and there are dozens of varieties which look identical. Only a few varieties are rare and chances that this fellow has any in his collection is very, very low.

As others have suggested, the best approach is to post some images here and let the folks give you opinions on the scope of the collection. Pick out 8-10 pages that you think represent his collection and post the images. If you cannot figure out how to post images let me know and I will contact you so you can send them to me via email. I will then post them for you.

Hi thanks for that Don Ye please send me your email address I will forward you some pictures I am sure they will be the run of the mill stamps and regarding ebay I never assume the price people ask for the items for sale are right it's all down to how much some one will pay

These are indeed run of the mill stamps, but a start on a beginners collection. There is little or no monetary value here. You should discard the torn stamps as they spoil a collection.

What about other countries in the same book or would you think they will be the same if so I will just file them away I have far to much stuff from the old chap has it is

Ok I will ask Don if I can email him some others I still don't understand may be I'm thick but how can the stamp on ebay be listed at 30k and mine be a big fat 0 ? But then it's same with classic cars they get over priced to on ebay and never sell I also gave rooms full of Dinky corgi and matchbox diecast they also have plummeted to rock bottom

Several possibilities:
The seller is a conman (Highly likely)
The seller is an inexperienced stamp collector and thinks they have a rare stamp (slightly possible)
The stamp on ebay is an actual rare stamp (Highly unlikely)

So my hypothesis is the seller is trying to sell a worthless item for $30,000. It is doubtful that this will happen.

You are not thick, but you may be naive in this regard. There are a bunch of idiots/thieves/conman on ebay. BUYER BEWARE!

That is the only thing I hate about ebay I will only buy what I need not want. I take what you say on board if it's for sale on ebay it's either fake useless or worse fake and useless if anything is marked up in value it's on ebay best to buy from dealers and the people that know I will get all the stamps here and get some one out to value them all but there is a lot

You'd need to give an example of the ebay lot in comparison with your own stamp to determine the value of the ebay material. In the case of some US material, common and scarce stamps may look the same at a casual glance. There is always the chance of finding something better in an old schoolchild's collection, but it will be very low.

People who don't know much about stamps sometimes find old ones and think they've hit the jackpot - so they list them on ebay with massive prices. Of course they don't sell. Only very rare stamps are worth lots of money and there are not many very rare stamps around - they are very rare.

As for yours, you have some quite nice ones. My recommendation would be to forget how much they could be sold for, and just read up on them. Your Great Britain stamps for example, the second page of scans shows a twopenny blue with S&J perforated into it - this is a 'perfin' and you can google S&J perfins, and see why it was done.

To the right of the page you have a not-so-common 1 1/2d Queen Victoria stamp (the one with the frame shaped a bit like a shield). This is a nice stamp to have. It has a clear 131 cancellation - again you can find out what this signifies, or someone on here can tell you. Underneath are a couple of old Guernsey revenue stamps, and there's also a 2/6 George VI stamp with a perfin of some sort (can't tell from the scan).

Looks alone can be deceiving.

Being the tiny 41 posts that I am; I rarely disagree with giants such as yerselves but I have to say that e-bay has a lot of good dealers and you can peruse it with a link from this own very own Community and I have just enjoyed a day wandering through the stamps on e-bay.
