Strictly for the birds: Happy Birthday to John James Audubon (1785-1851), a French American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Audubon, designed by William A. Roach (1888-1969), engraved by James T. Vail and Charles A. Brooks (vignette), and William B. Wells (lettering), and issued by the USA on April 8, 1940 as one of the "Famous Americans" series, Scott No. 874, plus an image of a portrait of Audubon in 1850 by an unknown artist which may have been a model for this stamp's design. - nethryk  |

Walked with the animals: Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopedic author of the Histoire naturelle. Nervy guy: Happy Birthday to Otto Loewi (1873-1961), a German-born American pharmacologist whose discovery of acetylcholine helped enhance medical therapy, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1936 with Sir Henry Dale. Dr. Loewi has been called the "Father of Neuroscience."
