Strictly for the birds: Happy Birthday to John James Audubon (1785-1851), a French American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Audubon, designed by William A. Roach (1888-1969), engraved by James T. Vail and Charles A. Brooks (vignette), and William B. Wells (lettering), and issued by the USA on April 8, 1940 as one of the "Famous Americans" series, Scott No. 874, plus an image of a portrait of Audubon in 1850 by an unknown artist which may have been a model for this stamp's design.

Walked with the animals: Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopedic author of the Histoire naturelle. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of the naturalist, designed and engraved by Gabriel-Antoine Barlangue, and issued by France on November 14, 1949, Scott No. B241, Y&T No. 856, plus an image of a painted portrait (1753) of Buffon by French artist François-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775).

Nervy guy: Happy Birthday to Otto Loewi (1873-1961), a German-born American pharmacologist whose discovery of acetylcholine helped enhance medical therapy, for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1936 with Sir Henry Dale. Dr. Loewi has been called the "Father of Neuroscience." Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Loewi, designed by Adalbert Pilch, engraved by Alfred Nefe, and issued by Austria on June 4, 1973 to commemorate the scientist's birth centenary, plus a photo of Otto Loewi in 1936.

Dean of debugging: In 1928 Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) by chance discovered the powerful antibiotic penicillin in the mold growing in a contaminated and previously discarded Petri dish. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a profile portrait of Alexander Fleming, a molecular structure diagram of penicillin, and laboratory equipment, designed and engraved by Claude Durrens, and issued by Gabon on November 21, 1987 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Fleming's discovery of antibiotics, Scott No. 420.

Highly energetic: Happy Birthday to Victor Francis Hess (1883-1964), an Austrian-American physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1936) for his discovery of cosmic rays. Here is an image of a Europa stamp featuring a portrait of Dr. Hess, designed by Adalbert Pilch, engraved by Werner Pfeiler, and issued by Austria on June 24, 1983 to commemorate the scientist's birth centenary, Scott No. 1245, plus a photographic portrait of Victor Hess a bit later in life.

Calling the shots: A belated Happy Birthday (July 12) to Léon Charles Albert Calmette (1863-1933), a French physician, bacteriologist and immunologist who discovered the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, an attenuated form of Mycobacterium used in the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis, and who also developed the first antivenom for snake venom, the Calmette's serum. Here is an image of a stamp honoring Albert Calmette, designed and engraved by Pierre Gandon, and issued by Saint Pierre and Miquelon on August 5, 1963 to commemorate the scientist's birth centenary, Scott No. 366, plus a photo of Dr. Calmette in 1930.

Displaced person: Happy Birthday to Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel (1784-1846), a German astronomer who was the first scientist to determine the distance from the sun to another star by the method of parallax, and a mathematician who systematized the Bessel functions (discovered by Daniel Bernoulli). Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Bessel and a depiction of the plot of a Bessel function, designed by German artist Hermann Schwahn (1927-2003), combined engraved by Hans-Joachim Fuchs and lithography, and issued by Germany on June 19, 1984 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Bessel's birth, Scott No. 1422, Michel No. 1219, plus an image of a painted portrait (1839) of Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel by Danish artist Christian Albrecht Jensen (1792-1870).

Breaking Good: Happy Birthday to Arne Wilhelm Kaurin Tiselius (1902-1971), a Swedish biochemist who in 1948 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his research on electrophoresis and adsorption analysis, especially for his discoveries concerning the complex nature of the serum proteins." Here is an image of a booklet stamp representing work done by Arne Tiselius, designed by D. Jonsson, engraved by Martin Mörck, and issued by Sweden on November 22, 1983 as one of five stamps honoring past Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners, Scott No 1478, Facit No. 1279, plus a photo of Dr. Tiselius.

Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Daviel, and depicting several of his surgical patients and a bright sun, designed by Albert Decaris, engraved by Charles Mazelin, and issued by France on February 23, 1963, Scott No. B369, Y&T No. 1374, plus an image of a painted portrait of Jacques Daviel.
