I dont whant remove the stamp from this nice envelope. So it will be hard to determine which grill this 2 cent washington has. In my opinion the grill is pointing up and points protruding upward from the front of the stamp. So it can only be a C-Grill or B-Grill (very unlikely)A-grill not possible because the grill is not on the entire stamp. I cant count properly the points maybe someone of you can help me to set tip of this stamp? Thanks.
I don't think anybody is going to be able to help you with the images you have provided. You should be able to easily tell if it is a points-up grill without lifting the stamp.
I applaud you for not wanting to remove that stamp from the cover. It is a strong, complete strike of the cancel which also ties the stamp to the cover.
However, if these photos are the best you can do with the gear you have available to you, then you may not have the equipment or skill to give the kind of controlled lighting closeup that will let us see the grill. We need to count points and see the shape of at least some of them to give you the answers you want. Are you able to do that?
Hey thanks sinclair, rdavid and essayk. I like the cancel too thats why I dont whant remove it . essayk of course three cent. I will try with better equipment to make proper photos. So you can evaluate again. I appreciate your opinions.
ok1, Nice pictures, but to show the grill you don't really want a studio-quality photo with head-on lighting. Instead we need one with very low-angle side lighting to show the depth of the grill impressions. A scanner with its contrast set very high often does this well.
As someone else mentioned, try pointing the light at a sharp angle. This could produce shadows on the grill that would make it easier. Here's another thought. Based on what you see with your eyes, how many vertical columns do you count? (ignore the measurement, just count the columns.) I think I see far fewer than needed for a C grill, but the pictures are still too rough to make a real guess.
From these photos, the grill points appear to be down, not up. The stamp color appears also to suggest either an "E" or "F" grill. We will be able to determine better with oblique lighting to see the grill impression shadowing as suggested by others.
21 or 22. E or F Grill points down (Ink and the valleys of the grill) IMO excludet also more points vertically and horizontally. This Grill seems to point up. Why? Ink and the peaks of the grill. http://www.stampsmarter.com/learnin...8Grills.html
The ink on this stamp wouldnt be also on the peaks if the grill points down. Its to small in size to be a B-Grill its foremost for shure a C-Grill. I dont quit my job haha.
Just looked at these pictures/video closely for the first time:
Grill points - if real - are definitely pointing down. E or F grill.
This whole cover looks fishy to me. That cancel - and the surrounding circle? The cancel is too perfect. And what's with that 'glaze' / gum on the front? Noticeably only on the grill part. And look at the bottom of the Albany cancel - where it is smeared. Paper/cover also looks very new & fresh to me...
ok1 - The cancel appears to be solid, so well-inked, covering both the peaks/valleys (which can happen with over-inked cancels). Also, from the light reflection, the square frame of the grill impression appears to reflect more light, so on top indicating points down.
Again, a scan or oblique angle lighting will reveal more detail to ascertain the grill impression.
