This has been an empty spot in my album for a some time, but now I have an opportunity to finally pick one up. Admittedly, it's not the choicest copy, but the price is right in my opinion. So I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on the authenticity. Comparing it to the genuine, and forgeries, on this page.. https://stampforgeries.ca/north-ame...umbus-issue/..it has more characteristics in common with a genuine stamp than any of the forgeries listed. Opinions? I also notice, for some reason, that all the copies listed on ebay are being offered @ 2-3x times relative Scott values. For the record, this one is being offered to me at less than 1/2 SCV.

Thank you. It's good to have another pair of eyes looking at something for you, for confirmation. Now, I just need to decide if I want it bad enough to buy it, or wait until another comes along that I can afford. |

Well, my 2006 Scott has it at $50 used and $200 unused. Doing a quick looksee through ebay, you can see used ones being offered (Buy it Now) in the $175-$250 range (I don't get this), with actual SOLD copies being in the $50-$80 range. This copy has no gum, but I don't see evidence of a postmark either. Its being offered as used, so I'll assume it is for the asking price of $24. Also, many of the SOLD copies on ebay are in pretty similar condition, although they are actually postmarked. Supposedly, 20,000 were printed and remainders were destroyed. Stampworld says 8,000 were issued. |

I guess the good thing is I actually have it, right now, in hand to examine, rather than relying on an ebay scan. |

That's a pretty dangerous looking forgery, do you happen to know who the forger was? |

Opinion: Cropped both and toggled. Spain and FT stamps are just about identical. Ergo, both are genuine, or both are forgeries. (and the colour is a uncanny match) |

Above genuine position 15 on the sheet of 20 1. The top letters are 1.9mm X 19mm, forgeries are larger 2. The horizon lines become progressively closer together 3. The square frame of the ornament is very close to the main frame. In forgeries it is sometimes farther away and more distinct 4. 8 lines to the top of the galleon 5. This figure has a medallion on his forehead 6. This figure has a buttoned shirt 7. The head of this figure is bounded by 3 lines 8. The hand touches the railing. In some forgeries it does not or is broken 9. The opening of the 3 is very narrow but much larger with most forgeries. Note the thickness of the 3 10. The perfs are 12, forgeries are 11.5 11. The mast is generally weak and very faint on some. The forgeries generally have a thick mast and one with none. In one forgery the ocean is very rough, disturbed There is also an imperforate but it is crude and the corner elements have many leaves |
