My guess is you will need a time machine to beat this impossible date of 2 Jan 1862!

that is a nice item. dates earlier than the official issues are known. these came about because documents that were presented after the tax acts wnt into effect required the tax be paid to be used in a court of law, and the stamps were sometimes backdated to match said documents.

My assumption is it is actually just 2 Jan 1863 and the individual used the wrong year.

I am sure we all used to do it when we used those check things old people use...

I have occasionally seen first issues cancelled in the late 1850's, backdated on documents.
