I have downloaded the trial version of Stamp Mate so I can compare it to the program I am currently using, StampManage. I am having a problem which hopefully those of you who use the program can clear up for me.
When you select a stamp from the catalog to add it to your collection you can click on Edit Stamp to bring up a dialog box which allows you to enter quantities. There is a drop down box for Condition but the only choices are: Mint, Extra Fine, Very Fine, Fine, Average and Poor. If you select Mint you have no way of indicating the centering or soundness of the stamp. If you select Very Fine (for instance) you have no way of indicating whether the stamp is mint or used and the soundness.
Am I missing something or is this program useless for actually cataloging your collection? I cannot find any way to add additional choices to the Condition drop down list. Ideally the program should provide three fields, one for mint or used, another for centering and a third for defects for other comments. Lacking separate fields, the Condition field drop down should at least offer choices of Mint VF, Used VF, Mint F, Used F, etc.
Hopefully I am just overlooking something in which case please kindly point me in the right direction.

Okay, I found a way to update the choices in the Condition drop down box so I was able to add both Mint and Used in each centering , eg Mint VF or Used F/VF. There is also a "Type" field in the Quantities dialog which allows freeform text so I think I can use it for condition notes such as defects. I don't know what the Type field was actually intended for.
So I think I have figured out a way to use Stamp Mate to record proper condition information for each stamp. Does anyone have an easier way? |

I think I have figured out a way to minimize the amount of data entry when entering a new stamp. The only thing I can't seem to make happen is to have the quantity field for a given status default to 1 instead of 0. Since I am almost always entering data for a single stamp having the quantity default to 1 would save at least a mouse click and a keystroke each time. When I do need to enter data for multiple identical stamps I would simply need to override the value 1.
So my final question (hopefully): Does anyone know how to change the default quantity from 0 to 1? |

I've used that program for awhile now, and find it pretty good. Favourite feature is the auto import of stamps.
To set up your own Conditions, go to the Data tab at the top. There you can set your entries for things like Status, Conditions, Gum, add your own Countries (the default list is missing some IMO). Then you'll see the list of conditions you've set when you add stamps. I did play around a bit to get those conditions/gum conditions set up for how I like to track things.
So for Condition I have 6 entries - Mint VF, Mint F, Mint VG, Used VF, Used F and Used VG. For Gum condition I have 3 entries - NH Never Hinged, H Hinged and NG No Gum Mint
Don't know of a way to default the quantity on entry to 1. Sorry! |

Thanks gmot. I went ahead and purchased the program and have started using it to inventory my US collection. So far I am liking it better than StampManage. It took awhile to figure everything out (as evidenced by this thread) but I now have it set up the way I want. The only thing that seems to be lacking is a report that will print out the collection showing totals for estimated value, catalog value etc. But I should be able to export the data to Excel and get totals that way. |
