I'd be interested in seeing peoples 832-834 that have shifts.
I recently bought one on ebay on the cheap, which I think was the most severe $1 shift I have come across. His nose is touching the edge!

There is no such thing as a "perforation guide dot".

The dots are residual lay-out dots from when the plate was being made. Ideally, they would have been burnished-away. They have nothing to do with the perforation operations.

Nice misperforations, but thus far, no vignette shifts.

Hi John,

I think you are wrong when it comes to the Prexies. I have found far too many examples, all in the same position, positioned in the same position horizontally/vertically on ALL values, both sheet and coils. I believe they were meant for electronic eye perforators.

Layout dots are located in different positions at the top of images, not in the locations shown on these pages. You are correct about layout dots.

Hal

bookbndrbob //Please take a closer look again..... FULL SHEET: if you look closely you'll see that the black portrait is shifted up across the entire sheet. You can verify this by looking at Plate # 22097 which is higher and out of alignment to plate 22094. 1st & 2nd PAGES: the black plate is shifted down and rides low against the top of the type "Woodrow Wilson". A "shift" by any other name is still a "shift" --

Hi John,
I can't remember where I saw it, but there was an article in either the Prexie Era of the UPSS Journal within the last year or two describing Perforation Layout Dots found on the Presidential Issues. It was either a free standing article or incorporated in another article. I'll see if I can locate it for you and post it.
Best,
Hal

PS Happy New Year

To show an example of what John and I are discussing take a look at the 24c Plate Blocks. These are shown with Layout dots (top right) arrows and Perforation Layout/Guide Dots position in the gutter across from the "S" in "STATES".

A Layout Dot is used to align an image and/or position an image side-to-side or top-to-bottom. Prexie Layout Dots are found at the TOP corners of images or at the along the top corners of Plate Numbers and to align Electric Eye Guide Bars

A Vertical Perforation Layout Dot or Guide Dot is positioned in the vertical gutter, 4mm down from the top of an image, in the center of a gutter, across from the "S" in "STATES" and aligns with nothing except a vertical perforation. A Horizontal Perforation Dot may be located the same 4mm distance at the bottom left hand bottom corner of a Presidential Issue on each stamp. Most dots are very faint and rarely noticed. Most are punched out during the perforation process.

The difference between Layout Dots and Perforation Dots: Layout Dots are normally erased, are rare and seldom found while Perforation Dots are never erased, always in the same place and there, unless punched out.

Hi John,

Rustad's PREXIES was written and (C)1994, over 25 years ago and many, many things have been learned about Prexies since that book was written. Rustad's is a great book, but it's not gospel... no book should be taken as such. Things change and new new information is found.

Best,
Hal

I am still a skeptic, all those dots are too small to be seen by man or machine in a high-speed perforating operation. Is there an actual citation to a government document or letter explaining them as you believe them to be?

Hi John,

As I said, I'm going to look for the article that was in the UPSS Journal or The Prexie Era. It was written by someone else. Until recently, I use to go by Rustad's description of the dots.

Best,
Hal
