Will opening the contents as it is not open affect the value of the stamps much ?

If you're sure the cover has contents, I would slit it open (very carefully and very slowly and with a sharp knife) either at the top or the left side). In-period contents, especially if printed, can only enhance the postal history value (without an negative effect on the value of the stamps). If there are no contents, there's no reason to open it.
