US Censor Cachet On Pow Mail From Canada - Info Please

I collect Canada George 6th with my main focus on WW2. I know nothing about US postal history. I recently obtained this POW card from a prisoner in Canada to his uncle in the US.



It is not that unusual - except it is from a survivor from a U-boat - but I know nothing about the red US censor cachet. I assume it is common but there is nothing to say where it was applied.

If anyone could to point me to an online link like about these or supply any info. about it I would be grateful.

I am not aware of any on-line link for these markings. However...

According to Broderick & Mayo, "Civil Censorship in the United States during World War II", p 31, the censor examiner numbers 101 to 1000 were allocated to the POW examiner division at Chicago on May 1, 1942 (General Order 56).

Some of these apparently were reallocated to the POW section at New York, as on page 32, they show that examiner numbers 117-352, 432-481, and 533-738 were used there.

The handstamp is identified as their Type C 4.1, which was used only at New York.

There is probably someone more knowledgeable that I who can explain this, but my interpretation is that these examiner numbers were probably never used at Chicago, and eventually most if not all were used at New York. The Broderick & Mayo book was published in 1980 and has never been update.

937 may be the APO Military Mail Censor Examiner for Ft Greely Alaska during WWII.

Camp 133 was in Lethbridge, Alberta although called an internment camp actually housed 13,341 POWs. The camp was opened in the summer of 1942 and received the bulk of POWs in November. The camp closed in December 1946. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...ps_in_Canada
