I now see that I have kept the stamp slightly wrong on perf cauge, but the result is the same after I did it right, on bouth cauges, after the book ...

I have measured and read but cannot find a solution.

Have used 2 different cauge, again and again, perf 11.25 * 10.5, then 11 * 10 1/2 ok?

Then this should be 632? But 632 is 19.25 * 22.50? right?
This stamp is 18.75, its NOT over 19.

Then I think 578 coilwaste, shortprinted..but it's perf 11 * 10, and my stamp is perf 11 * 10 1/2

604 has straight edges, 581 is perf 10 * 10 so what am I not seeing?

backside clean, NO ink

any suggestions ?

You found your stamp to be perf 11x10.5. It is a Scott 632. End.
No measurement of the printed design is necessary, nor changes the result.
You are getting caught up in the dimensions, when the perforations alone will ID a huge percentage of these.
Start with the perfs and put the ruler away.

ok, I read that the print image is the same size as 596 and 552, but you now inform me that is not true. ok, then 632 has another picture. fine for me :-) I measure because the "others" have said that we amateurs should do homework before we post. So I'm just trying to prove that I do everything I can to find out for myself and that you "experts" see that I try as best I can. But then I stop measuring ahead as you say. ok :-)

And you say perfect 11, but isn't that wrong? It does not fit in 11, it fits perfectly in 11, 25

But please, why are you so frustrated and often answer with END in the first answer? Isn't it allowed for amateurs to groom new targets after their first answer since you write END? Do you want me to quit post? I just try to learn

The actual perforations are 11.25 x 10.50 but many catalogues have it as 11 x 10.5

By "End" I mean, you have successfully found the ID of this stamp by the perforation rate alone. Congratulations! Sorry that written messages often fail to convey tone. (I don't recall using "end" in a previous post, but could be incorrect.)

The challenge with the Scott catalogs is the rounding of the perforation rates to the nearest 0.5 and the inclusion of image dimensions which are also approximate (or slightly variable). You are correct the "perf 11" is a bit higher. If there is any frustration it is with the Scott catalog for not having more exacting measurements and not having a flow chart for ID'ing the Washington/Franklins and this following definitive issue. Generally to start with perforations first, then consider other aspects if needed. The ID section in the front of the Specialized Catalog is very poor as a flow chart. The textbook needs improvement, not the student.

I didn't say anything about 596 or 552.

Hey Dronen71;

I agree with you.

I have measured and still learning to measure with gauge which I have learned is sorta like a Periodic Table there is more and more to it the more you learn to read it. Please stay
I saved your post as it helps me learn more about using a Gauge. All is necessary and that is part of stamp collecting DETAILS when someone tells you ""That's the BOTTOM LINE THE END"" Let it fly off because it is not. Thanks!!!

ok john becker, you dint, I did and in the headtext I inform about that since the perf was the same as 632 I wanted to dobbelcheck, so I think then, compareing size with 581, 596 and 552 since 632 should have same size then I have 2 reasens to think 632. But there I see that it did not match...for you "expert" know when the time for measuring size come, I dont. But I focus on perf now and read and read so I dont bored somebody with stupid questions.

I understand that you will be bored of people who only see, wow! I have green 1c franklin and its longer then ordinary!! , throwing themselves into the forum and not dropping the dream.
But in focus theory, perf, pump information out of the "good guys" in a polite way of course ... but it becomes difficult if there is little room for question, that we amateurs cannot ask again if we do not see the connection, remember, it can be awkward to understand what all of these terms are ... so I tried to do the homework because I want to learn ... and others please try to understand that if we beginners learn by asking .

louise411, thanks :-) I want to stay :-)

I bought a large collection of my family after my uncle died suddenly, he had been saving for 45 years .... I sold some Chinese mao stamps from the 60's, wow! Then I realized that Uncle was a real philatelist, 2 of the mao-stamp = 55,000 NOK, that's about 8,000 dollars, so I have many books left from all over the world and have fun, because I know there is a lot of good there. ...aunt has told me what he considered the value of the collection, wow ... and now the collection is in my hands;-) and I know there are more .....

Always good to ask. Your posts are very good and instructive - exactly because you are doing homework and sharing with us the steps you are taking. They are so much better than posts of: "I have a stamp. Tell me what it is."

I am no expert - just still a student. I recall my own learning curve to ID the 2 cent offset-printed Washington stamps of c1918 when I had only a handful of examples to compare against each other and the catalog illustrations. A collector 40 years older than me helped me through them. The internet makes the learning process so much faster today.

First part sounds like a coil stamp. Green or red paper is typically a surface condition, the result of poor plate wiping leaving a very light background streaking in the same color as the stamp. The paper should be its true color on the back side.

How can I upload pictures in the reply ? Do I have to edit the hole tpoic ? Because I see other pictures I uploaded disappears when I put in more, I dont remenber, is it max number ?

Yes, "blue paper" is a special case as you are finding out. There are lots of threads on blue paper. Interesting that one can learn just as much from viewing the back side of a stamp than the front side.

No limit to photos. Others will be able to describe it better - there is a "Reply to Topic" icon at the far right of each thread title on the listing of "new posts" which will get a reply box with special commands.
