Query To The Forum On Stanley Gibbons Number

Can any of our collecting brethren in the UK provide the Scott equivalent of Stanley Gibbons US #8 or, failing that, reproduce the SG description for this number? Many thanks.

No you read it correctly. I have a One-Cent Franklin that was described as Stanley Gibbons #8, and I'd like to know what the seller thought it was by translating into Scott (I don't have access to a SG catalog). Though if SG #8 is really Scott #1 then the seller messed up.

Just on a hunch I looked at an old SG simplified catalogue and sure enough, SG8 is an 1857 perf. 1c Franklin.

The SG Simplified catalogue misses out many subtleties and variations, this catalogue is not for anyone who collects in more depth than one of each obvious colour and design. I use an SG concise for my British collection. The SG specialised catalogues should come with an Ice pack and acetominophen tablets.

SG 8 is described as "1c blue , Type II"

Type II has "Curved outer line at top and bottom complete. Balls of scrolls and lower part of the plumes missing. Top ornaments complete or incomplete. Side ornaments complete."

There are two other shades:

SG 8a Deep blue

SG 8b Pale blue

and also:

SG 8c Cracked Plate.

The basic stamp is listed as SG 5-11 with various additional shades and varieties.

The SG SOTW (Simplified catalogue) just lists the cheapest one and in my 2003 edition this was SG 11.
