I had this for sale a while ago and removed it until I could get clarification on the value and legitimacy of the category. It is Germany 510 and a single was listed on a stamp sales site as a sub category of 510_1. Is there someone that can verify the sub category as a color difference and the catalog value at apx. $7.00 per stamp in MNH condition? Sorry for the shading on the right side. Guess my fat finger got in the way. Thanks Paul

Hi Wheelman. Have you checked with ebay? I just checked and someone is selling the whole sheet for $14.95. Peter |

Paul,
That stamp is a garden variety Mi 785 / Sc 510. There are no major color subvarieties. CV is minimal. The entire sheet part is probably worth a couple bucks. |

There are 2 color types…..Bluish violet and (Blackish) red-violet. Plus there is a variety with different gum which can sell for more. |

The color on that issue is more accurately described as on a spectrum between dark bluish violet to blackish red violet due to gradual changes in the ink. Because the changes were so gradual, they are not catalogued separately, and none is considered significantly more rare than any other. All are worth minimal value. |

Thanks all for the responses and clarification. Now if I could only use them to mail letters. At least they would be of some value. LOL |

This is my non-expert opinion:
The first stamp in floortrader's photo is towards the red end and the second stamp is closer to the blue end of the aforementioned spectrum from dark bluish violet to blackish red violet. They come from full sheets of Mi 785. On this point, I think PostmasterGS is correct. The other two are very different shades and they come from booklets. Michel does not admit that they are a totally different color than 785 from the sheets, but I think they are more accurately described as somewhere between blue and violet-blue (or some other primarily blue shade). Except for the 6pf, the Hitler booklet stamps match up pretty well in color with their full sheet counterparts and they are given the same cat. number. |

The catalog excerpt that perf12 posted has a footnote: "Color research on this issue is not yet complete, therefore, provisionally, no new color variants can be cataloged (or expertized)."
Just because there is no catalog entry does not mean it is not collectible. My collection of the 6 pfennig stamp has more than a dozen color shades. |
