The 5c price hike for the 1oz first class rate from 50c to 55c was pretty large compared to previous increases in the last 20 years. Given the high amount of USPS debt, is it inevitable that 5c or more per year price hikes in the 1oz first class rate will become the norm?

Thats not too bad! That is like approx .42c Canadian. Your rate hikes will no doubt become the new norm, not unlike us up here in Canada.
We went directly from 55c to 85c a couple of years ago in Canada for same. Thats if you bought the booklet of 10. Now this year it has just gone up to $1.05 cdn for a single stamp purchase for same service or .90 if you buy booklet of 10. All because of costs they say.
And for me to send you the same letter across the border will cost me $1.17. And that is before 15% goods and services tax applied to all above rates. I would take your rate anytime, thank you.
The trouble is, the more USPS raises the first class rate, the more people will switch to on-line payments. Even though my wife considers me a dinosaur when it comes to on-line stuff, I switched all my bills to automatic payments the last year, so I figure the PO is out my $20-$30 clams/year.
