Inherited Stamp Collection And First Day Covers

Hi All!
I recently was given my grandfather's stamp collection, which included hundreds of first day covers. These range from the 40's, 50's, and 60'. In searching ebay, i've noticed that these have a difficult time selling. Is it that these are no longer collected? If not ebay, where would one have the easiest time unloading these? I do plan to keep a few of the more meaningful ones, but I'd rather give these to someone that would appreciate them more.

Some people do still collect them, it's just that the supply of modern FDCs is quite large compared to the number of collectors.

Besides the few FDC specialists, topical collectors pursue them too (at least the covers pertaining to their topic of course).

There are some collectors, but the supply of modern first day covers (1940s up to the present) greatly overwhelms the number of collectors. There are a few exceptions, mainly the very high face value stamps (such as the $1 and $5 ones), and a few of the very unusual cachet ones, but for the most part they tend to be sold for very little. You can buy very large quantities of them for wholesale prices - as little as 10 to 25 cents each. Or you could bundle them in groups of 5 to 10 similar ones and sell them on ebay with starting bids of $1 and be happy with whatever they may bring but don't expect high bids. Or you might wish to think about donating them to a local stamp club to give away to groups like disabled vets, or to children who are just getting interested in stamp collecting. That way you are doing a good thing and you can take a deduction on your taxes.

You may check out local Scout Groups. Merit Badges are still offered for stamp collecting; many Boy/Girl Scout Groups function through local church and YMCA organizations.

Going off on a tangent here....

Back in my Boy Scout days, the Stamp Collecting merit badge was the first one I earned. I had already been collecting for four or five years at that point, so it was a piece of cake.

There was a very interesting youth exhibit on the history of the Stamp Collecting merit badge at WESTPEX several years ago. Brief summary: the requirements have become less rigorous over the years.
