Hi There, I have a what looks to be a pristine (MNH) S/S of this beautiful stamp in an envelope from the Posten Frimarken

The question is, it does not seem to have any glue on the back.Is just a copy? Or is it bona fide??

Thanks for your help as always!

These were issued with gum.

But, were they issued with PVA gum? In that case, it wouldn't be readily apparent.

Excellent point there Bob, Aussie stamps PVA were coloured with a bluish tint for that reason, I believe.

PVA (polyvinyl acetate) glue/gum is a modern synthetic material. It differs from the old natural gums in that it doesn't leave a sheen on the back of the stamp. In other words, you really can't see that there is gum on the stamp. It is very strong, but reversible (can be removed), although it is a bit stubborn. With used stamps this can be a problem, because PVA residue can cause loose stamps in glassine to stick together.

PVA gum is used for many gluing processes, but I don't believe it was used for postage stamps until the late 1980's or early '90s.

Bob, Canadian stamps already had PVA gum starting late 1971

Thanks lithographing. Was thinking about this after I wrote it, and the U.S. transportation coils came to mind. Some of these have PVA gum, as well, and they are earlier printings.
