I have this very interesting Jackson a45 I believe it's a Scott's 157c. I may be wrong. But this stamp has a cracked plate I believe, which I don't see in any other Jackson's a45. I believe its brown? Lack of a secret mark, may make it something else? It has a double grill I believe a I grill it measure's 8mm x 7mm. Any idea's it would be great! Here are some pic's

I grills occur on National printings, not Continental printings. The only grill possible on a Continental printing is a J grill. So if this is really an I grill the stamp cannot be a 157c. |

I agree with Rhett. This is technically a split grill rather than a double grill, and since only part of each grill impression is visible it is somewhat problematic to identify. But the color of this stamp appears to be red brown, and the grill on the left clearly has 10 rows. This appears to be a National Banknote stamp with split I grill, Scott 135. The question of whether a secret mark really exists on the two-cent large banknote is debatable, but in any case this example (as shown in the fourth photo) does not appear to have any of the features sometimes described as a "secret mark" for the two-cent Continental Banknote (Scott 157).
IMO, it is always better to identify grills by counting rows and columns than by measuring area in mm. |

Thanks for your input how about the cracked plate that should help in identify it I would think. |

I just thought about how to tell if its red brown or brown how about a comparison . I don't think you can tell the colors very good through a computer monitor. But I will try see if you can tell the difference . |

Look close the lines of hatching aren't complete or strait and there are missing spots ,a scratch doesn't do that ,a scratch will lift paper up leaving a groove or tear look much bigger lines if you angle your stamp you would see the grooves you don't see them here. you see a pattern of a circle in a form of a line of a possible weak spot. That what I think. |

Caper, thanks! It has been 135A in Scott since 2013, when the I grills attained major catalog number status. |

No Dan, you misunderstand my previous post. A scratch in the plate, which will behave/print just like an engraved line. |

I guess in conclusion it has to be 135a if these grills are a I grill , and the cracked plate is not a cracked plate but just scratched plate unless there are more like this one or maybe mine is a one off, who knows. What's the difference in price wise a cracked plate or a scratched plate I don't know .I don't see anything in the Scott's Catalog about a scratched plates so they must not be worth much. But thanks for all the help everyone ,it was great discovery of a most interesting stamp . |

Quote: wouldn't a National Bank note with an 'I' grill be a 135A? Haha thanks, Caper. My 2002 US Specialized must be a little out of date. I'm not always up on the catalog changes that took place during my hiatus from the hobby 2006-2014. I'm still trying to wrap my head around 10A and 11A... |

I understand Dudley. I too took a long hiatus from the hobby, from around 1974 until around 2000. It's more rewarding now as I have more time to devote to it, especially during the cold winter months. Until my coming back I survived with a Scott Specialized 1955! |
