Scott 1322 No Peach Color

Hello All

The two stamps pictured below are from two different plate blocks ( one on top of the other ) and they are not tagged.

Does scott #1322 'The Boating Party' suppose to have peach color under the rowers left arm and along his back right side ? (top) Or is it suppose to be a clear lightish green ? (bottom)

HTx, all the examples of this stamp I have seen match up with the top stamp in your image. It seems the bottom stamp has some other strange incongruities as well, including the sock on the baby's leg being taller than the top stamp image as well as the greenish hue missing from the middle boat bar. Certainly peculiar, though I'm not sure this could be called a missing color error (as I am by no means an expert). Perhaps a more experienced collector can weigh in and say what they think is going on here?

That's a good observation.

It would be useful to see side-by-side scans of your entire stamps. From what is visible in the two portions shown, this appears to be a simple mis-registration of color creating an illusion of a color missing. Page 214 of the 1970 edition of the "Postage Stamps of the United States" published by the USPS has the following description of the 2-pass printing process:



And these two examples where the second pass (the darker colors) is registered low and then high. It makes for some strange results

Thanks for the posting. The printing method was informative and your used examples do show some resemblance to my MNH blocks, especially the sock.
