Certainly true in Australia. Wild speculation until the inevitable burst of the bubble.

For me, the pleasure of collecting (and the thrill of the chase) far outweighs the financial cost. I have no plans to sell while I'm alive.

The 1980s saw significant inflation and people moving into collectible items as a hedge against the inflation. I do not think that folks would want to bank on that happening again. (At least in US the Fed Reserve now plays games to prevent those kinds of inflation rates.) And of course in the 1990s the internet had significant impact on collectible prices as availability exploded.

While it may be an anomaly, I have noticed several recent issues with significant price increases in the 2019 catalog.

For instance, the 2012 booklet Vintage Seed Packets is now valued at $50.00 each.

This is just one example.

There has to be some demand for these issues or the prices would stagnate or drop, as has been the case with the 1940-1980's issues where they were saved by the millions.

Will the hobby continue? Absolutely, but not in the brick-and-mortar store which older collectors are accustomed to.

Local and national clubs and societies are struggling with declining memberships because the collector of today is a solitary collector. They build their collections in the comfort of their homes, using electronic media to do so and rarely, if ever, venture out into philatelic circles.

It would be really great if they would, though!

No, lower demand for some issues than for other issues is nit market inefficiency, it is a social trend which may or may not change.
