The kids are fruit tree saplings. I typically do not expect kids exposed to philately (or history in general) to immediately embrace it. Instead I consider it like planting a tree that might take years before it bears fruit.
Based on my own life, I completely agree with this.
I remember way back when I was hmm 7 or 8 I think (late 1970's), my parents bought me an Uncle Remus stamp collecting set (how I remember this, I have no idea). It had a kids album, tongs, hinges and 50 or so stamps. I collected in a haphazard way for a few years, buying penny packets at a local shop and was on one of those monthly approval lists too if I remember correctly.
After a few years, I drifted away from the hobby as other things took priority: school, sports, girls, the pub (when I was a bit older obviously), buying a house etc etc - all the usual things you do between the ages of 10-30ish
I got back into collecting in my 40's and am thoroughly enjoying it, so as 51studebaker stated; younger people don't have to be written off just because they don't immediately embrace the hobby and are doing what most people do whilst growing up.
