You probably already read this in the other post, but I've had great luck using the freezer method! |

I tried the freezer method and they came apart. Sadly, the Lindbergh stamp lost just a little of the picture on the front of the stamp. Thanks for your help. |

Quote: I tried the freezer method and they came apart. Sadly, the Lindbergh stamp lost just a little of the picture Sheesh, confirms what I often say here, you damaged a stamp for the want of a little gum. Your only solution was to soak quickly in cold water. Hope others take this, stuck together stamps rarely separate without soaking. Millions of stamps are ruined by wishful thinking. |

When I soak 'mint' stamps, there's often a good deal of residual gum still on the back which you can feel as it forms a slippery surface. I generally remove it by rubbing while they're still under water.
My hunch is that not all the gum dissolves and disperses in the water, so just a short soak will still leave some original gum behind, if desired. |

I may add, my opinion on separating stuck stamps, was not arrived at by any great wizardly pre-knowledge.
It was through countless mistakes, not sure if it was laziness or wishful thinking. But losing my last key stamp in a set, possibly worth $20 or so, and seeing the tiny bit of face print lift off, I don't even think twice now, if the two are joined, I hear the mantra "DON'T DO IT!" I immediately get up and pop them into cold water, only takes around a minute or so, out of the water and into a drying sandwich.

Thanks rod222. If I have a similar situation I will put them in cold water. |

Steam, freezing....you still end up with a stamp with 'disturbed gum' (at best). For me, if the stamp is worth enough to save, then it is worth enough to not ruin. I just soak, lowest risk for damaging a stamp. Don |
