Represa Cal. Postmark Question

This item was described as a machine cancel by the seller which I disagree with. Under glass the impression is fresh and unblemished, and shows all characteristics known to me to be a "rubber" device.

Jim Forte lists this office open 1892- 1971 and shows a 2/5 Doane dated Jan 1 1909.

The online Doane listings show this Doane in use 1905 - 1913.

Thus the date on this unusual postmark falls after the Forte listing but within the period of use of the Doane at this office.

Anyone familiar with this postmark?

First off, buy the item you have shown if you not done so already.
It is a handstamp, not a machine.

Note the differences between yours and his:
1. the lettering is a different size and spacing from the rim.
2. Forte's doane is a true type 2 doane with 4 paired bars. Yours has 6 paired bars, thus a doane mimic, unlisted on Gary Anderson's postal history website which is where I go for doane data.

This postmarks is illustrated in Doug DeRoest and Randy Stehle's monograph A Catalog of Non-standard Postmarks, published in the La Posta Journal in 37 installments back in the 1990s.

He identifies it as a Doane mimic, as John Becker noted.

If I may chime in, ( and, ignorant of US Postmarks) I made this query in 2008, regarding REPRESA, and it was suggested it may be from Folsom State Prison.

Would that be accurate?

rod222, your Represa cancel is a typical "box cancel" stocked to almost every PO in the States.

It would not be related to any prison. Prisons usually require the use of meters, permits or embossed envelopes to avoid using stamps due to the ability to hide things under them.

sort of what I expected, interesting to note how experience and time changes one's appraisal ability.
I was convinced of the advice in 2008, on seeing them today, I suspected just a normal box.
