PIPEX is being held in Portland OR 5-10 to 5-12. We will be in that area on a trip and I want to spend a day there before going down the Oregon Coast.

Is anyone on here in that area and if so would you know if it is doable for us to manage a trip down to the redwoods park in Northern CA make stops along the coast and do it all in a week? I've heard the coastal highway is very slow. Thanks for any input.

Hi,

We have made this trip many times. This March, we left Portland in the midafternoon and stayed in Lincoln City that evening. (Only about 2 hours.) The next day we drove all day and made it to Eureka. Now, in May it will take longer, but you can do it easily in three days.

The drive is definitely worth while. A week should be doable, especially since (if you are time strapped) you can get back to Portland from Cresent City in one day via I5 as it is freeway driving once you get to Grant's Pass.

You can also do it the other way, and then slowly make your way back along the coast.

If you need some suggestions as to what to see, just ask.

Thanks. We plan to fly into Portland on Thursday, will stay at the show hotel three nights. One day we'll drive east along the Columbia river and back again. Another I will spend at the show while other family members do other stuff. Sunday we'll drive down to Newport OR and spend two nights there, then to Crescent City CA for three nights, return to Portland on Friday and fly home Saturday. Our 23 year old son will be coming with us and will do much of the driving.

I've never been out that way and am looking forward to it.

It sounds like a good trip.

Be sure to fill up in Brookings, as gas is more expensive in California.
