I have a lot of stamps stuck together and stuck to old glassine envelopes. Worldwide, all time periods, though mainly US mid-century.
I built a sweatbox, and it works great for the stamps stuck together. However, I end up with stamps with old glue on the printed side, which obviously means that the gum has been disturbed on the stamp it was stuck to.

Also, most of the ones stuck to glassine are blocks. I haven't had any luck sweating these off without disturbing the gum.

Here's my question - would it be nuts to just say screw it and soak them all? I know it would devalue at least some of them, but I'm starting to think that would be better than old, dirty gum everywhere.

What do you think?

Are these stamps you intend to sell? If not, why not just soak them and add to your collection? On inexpensive stamps not worth marketing, I would prefer no glue to sticky remnants on the printed side. Or, as they say "don't sweat it" (sorry)

My personal preference is to patiently soak them.

On its own, sweated gum tends to devalue stamps from their mnh levels, and given the gum situation, imo...into the bathtub they go...

Never had success sweating, into cold water for mine, then into the drying sandwich.

As an aside, with self adhesive stamps, if stuck one on top of another,
the top stamp is the only salvageable stamp, using release agents, the stamp below the top, retains the tacky gum.
Same goes for "sellotape" on stamps.

I've got several full / partial sheets of stamps that have bonded together. Nothing extremely rare in my opinion. So what about pulling off the singles that aren't stuck to other stamps and soaking the ones that are? I tried sweating / steaming and that made them curl. Kind of a bummer but what can I do?
