Hi manosp,

These rectangular marks are handstamped overprints rather than cancellations.

They were applied in Crete because of the island's double tax rate.

I think one of the resons in this period of Ottoman rule was the
difficulty in collecting taxes,especially in potentialy rebelious areas such as Crete.Taxing official documents was an easier approach.The debt
of the Empire was growing say by day towards the end of the 19th century.

Thanks Perf12, I read also that Crete island was one of the rare places in Ottoman empire region that people was able to own land, in most places land was public. I looked around to find similar revenue stamps but no luck.

These Crete revenues are listed in various catalogues and handbooks such as Feenstra, MacDonald, Barefoot or Forbin.

Thanks Nigel, I saw a post of you at stampboards forum about forgeries overprints on these revenues stamps, whats your opinion about mines.
