Think of these as being similar to postage due stamps that were cancelled as full sheets by the PO but were never used. They would still have gum, but no one would catalog them as mint stamps.

I see this all the time.
Let's simplify it:
Canceled is used.

Doesn't matter how or when the cancel is applied.
It's still used.

If you walked into PO, purchased a block of stamps, asked the clerk to cancel them... they still have gum, they are used.

One more thought..

Isn't it illegal to use a USED stamp on a letter/envelope as per the Post Office...haha.
