Hi, Laos has issued 3 stamps in 1981 for the 6th Birthday of the Nation. Various sellers claim that the stamps have been withdrwan shortly after issue asking 2-3 digit prices. Michel does not mention anything and give low prices for thee stamps. Can anyone shed light on this maybe from other catalogues ? https://www.delcampe.de/de/sammlero...1439902.htmlThanks DIeter

Thanks for the reply. The 36 in the auction are for MH rather than MNH.
I am still puzzled by the fact that it seems Michel and SG are rating those stamps MNH with prices of about 1, but they are being offered much higher than that.
So where is the ambiguity steming from ? Is Yvert and Scott on the same path rating them very low ?

SG 512-514 - unused £2.05 (2008)
Scott #352-354 - unused $2.35 (2009)

From Stampboards (2014)
"6th Anniversary of Lao PDR: Since 1980 up to 1996, Laos printed its stamps mainly in Cuba. Most of the sets from this period are easily available. From unknown reason to me, one set from this period, issued on December 2, 1981 to commemorate the 6th Anniversary of Lao PDR, became extremely rare in MNH condition. In the last decade I saw maybe 5-7 offers of this set. For years this set was priced for few dollars but now Scott catalog set the price of the MNH set on 225$" |

If they were issued without gum, as Nigel mentions, an "MNH" description/price is meaningless. |

Something is going on
https://www.original-briefmarken.de...les-RepublicIssue notice: MiNo. 514-516 were already withdrawn shortly after issue. According Laos Post hitherto only about 100 sets were delivered or sold. Of the canceled sets (200 sets) were sold all normal at the post switch. Contrary to the listing at Michel Catalogue, the mint (MNH) Sets are traded with 250 to 400 euros, depending on the quality. Scott lists the set mint never hinged (MNH) with US $ 250, but something past the market conditions! |

Catalog values (Scott or Michel) for new issues are often simply based on a face value formula. Scott lists most of them at around double face, mint or used, for example. When a set is withdrawn (as appears to have happened in this case) or unofficially issued in limited quantity, it will usually get a dash or italics for the catalog value until a retail price is established: but that's only the case when the catalog editors realize that happened.
Many countries are not particularly well-updated by catalog editors, though, and I guess Laos is one of them. |
