Any Newfoundland specialists out there? Is this N FLD #1 authentic?

Thanks!

The back threw me off. It looked too bright....

Thanks! I mean the sources you sent indicate that the stamp is genuine. I also went through the NFLD specialize catalog section on forgeries. Perhaps the whiteness of the back is lighting... The mesh seems to show on the back as well...

I'm not a specialist in this issue, but is it possible it is a proof? (Or an altered proof to look like the stamp?)
This kind of "Vibrant color and white paper" is a queue in US philately of examples from that era that are frequently altered proofs.
India paper is particularly bright white.

Interesting idea, but the proof in India paper is worth about $4,000 (versus the actual stamp which is constantly available for well under 100, so I doubt it is an altered proof. Thanks!

swankyspoon..

Newfoundland's first issue was on January 1, 1857...The stamps were recess-printed by Perkins, Bacon & Company. The 1d was imperforate and issued in sheets of 120...See below.

Robert

Even if it were a forgery, keep it..some forgeries are worth as much as the genuine stamp and even more..Below is one sheet of many that is full of fake.forgery stamps..Make for a nice interesting collection.
