I have a few questions about this stamp. I'm getting conflicting info from a number of sources. Turning now to the experts here on this forum.

One source of confusion is the claim that this is the world's first self adhesive stamp...True or False?

Second source of confusion. Stamp is surcharged 2 cents. When did this occur? Info I have is this was quickly changed to a higher surcharge shortly afterwards. Anyone have details on this 2 cent surcharge?

The surcharge is just the shift from £sd to decimal currency. Issued on 4/8/1964. The self-adhesive stamps were first issued on 10/2/1964.

Tom,
Correct. Sierra Leone produced the first self adhesive stamp, which also was the first "free form stamp" 10th February 1964. to commemorate the World's fair in New York.

The set of 14 were printed in combined intaglio and lithography by Walsall.
Issued in sheets of 30

Sierra Leone abandoned this gimmick in 1972
The Guiness Book of Facts and Feats 1982 James Mackay.

I viewed the link provided by perf12. The NY World's Fair stamp was indeed the first. The die was recycled and used again for other stamps such as the JFK stamp. One of the things I found interesting about this particular stamp was the surcharge amount. It doesn't appear to be appropriate for the date of issue of the JFK stamp. I could be mistaken.

Is there an "appropriate" for a surcharge? If you were seeking a precise correlation between £sd and decimal, I suppose there would be. But if you were simply changing the value, there wouldn't. Or do you mean that there was no postal justification for a 2c surcharge?

2c may have been a "make up" stamp, providing shortfall makeup for other denominations / services.
