This thread in many ways is emblematic of some of the problems in our hobby. By chance, I read Andyrich74's recent entry on this thread where he bemoans no one to share his interest and hobby with. Out of interest, I clicked on his profile and to my surprise found that he lists his location about 20 minutes from where I am currently sitting in my den writing this note. But when I clicked to send him an email and introduce myself, I am met with a notice that "this member does not wish to receive emails." Why would someone complain of not having someone to share an interest or hobby and then block an opportunity for someone to contact him?
Andy74: if you read this, since you don't want anyone to send you an email, why don't you send one to me instead. In the past few weeks I met, quite by accident, another forum member who happens to live about 20 minutes North of me just as you live 20 minutes south. We have met , exchanged stories over lunch and dinner, attended a local stamp club meeting—-all and all a very pleasant experience. If the two of us are in your local area, I bet there are more. But you are never going to find them if you block their innocent and friendly attempt to contact you.

Thanks for reaching out funcitypapa; honestly had no idea my setting did not allow me to receive emails; I'll un-check that box! Glad you made the effort.
Whereabouts do you live? (Just the general area, of course.) |

And if someone could tell me how to allow emails, would be helpful; did not find the option when I clicked on my profile. Won't allow me to send emails either.
Much appreciated. |

Well, no-one else has any real interest in my stamps. However, I got started with stamp collecting because my dad collected USA stamps - strictly as a hobby, as our family was not well off financially. And my Sunday School teacher, when I was in 4th or 5th grade, learned I was interested and gave me a few Japan FDCs, which I still have today. My sons had (emphasis on HAD) a passing interest in stamp collecting and started mounting US stamps in their own albums, but alas, that did not last. Too many other distractions like baseball cards, rap music, video games.... |

I'm late to this party. My wife collects so we enjoy each other's collections. My focus is US and hers is Eastern Europe. I can't say either of us spends much time with the other's collection, but we look over each other's shoulder once in a while. I have a friend who collects old coins who I share stuff with (he lives across the country - so mostly texts of new purchases we each make). I don't really understand coins and he doesn't really understand stamps, so that means we have a chance to explain them to each other which I enjoy.
I should add that my father and his father before him were avid collectors. I never got to share mine with my grandfather, but I did show mine to my father before he passed away, and I'm very glad he got to see it. He liked it a lot and I'll always remember that. |

My cat sits beside me patiently until I finish so she can get some attention. Never climbs on the table. |

If you are asking where I buy my stamps? Then yes to ebay and Hipstamp; and occasionally a seller with their own website (I've been looking towards private sites for Canal zone, Hawaii, Philippines, and so forth as both sites are hit or miss for the lesser-collected genres.) Collect unused, but am ok with MH or NG stamps; just try to focus on centering and the appeal of the front side. (Makes it more affordable as well, obviously.) By the way, are you the person that funcitypapa said he met in the Tampa area? |
