I've been interested in learning more about the huge number of varieties that have been identified for many of the earlier French stamps and was pleased to find that 2018 paperback copies of Spink Maury are available for only $10. The other option is Yvert et Tellier which is somewhat more expensive. Just sharing in case anyone else might be interested. Note that both are written in French.

That is an excellent price for the Spink Maury catalogue. Within the last month purchased the 2017 hardcover version for less than 20 USD. New including shipping.
The Spink Maury catalogue is a tremendous resource. The level re of detail and scope of information provided exceeds that of Y&T. Especially for issues of 1950 and earlier.
The drawings/illustrations included in SForgCA's posting is indicative of the detail included for many classic issues.
Note: Catalogue content is French throughout.
1,100 pages. Ten dollars. Do the math.

I've had a lot of difficulty figuring out when and how the Maury catalogs for French Colonies were issued. There was a fairly recent one I believe covering Africa, but I can't figure out how to obtain "recent" versions for Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. I realize these catalogs are likely out of print but there isn't much info on the Spink site for their publishing portfolio.
Any insights? |

shermae - I've no idea if Spink intends, in due course, to publish new editions of the Maury catalogues for the colonies. However, it seems to have acquired what remained of the old Maury/Dallay stock, which is available on its website https://spinkbooks.com/index.php?ro...gory&path=88The colonial catalogues referred to in this thread aren't among these. |

The Spink Maury catalogues are excellent.I purchased the Timbres de France 2019 edition at Stampex.Stamps up until 1960 are listed in a hard-backed version and there is a smaller soft-backed version for the other issues. The cost was 25 UKL I also bought the 2005-6 Dallay catalogue for French Colonies in Africa and 2006-7 Dallay catalogue for DOM-TOM They are excellent reference books and cost 5 UKL each. |

Having recently purchased the Maury for French African colonies (2010-11 edition) and comparing it to the Yvert for French colonies (2017 edition), while moving stamps for several colonies out of an old album, I have to agree Maury is far superior. The level of detail and accompanying explanatory notes as well as historical background is superb.
I now use Yvert more as a quick handbook, since it is smaller, font nicer to read and the country listings are purely alphabetical (so easier for quick finding of a stamp), whereas Maury is great when I want detail (it lists countries by region, then alpha within that). It also covers areas like cancels, millesimes, etc that Yvert does not as in much detail. Maury has 300 more pages and covers less countries than comparable Yvert. So together a great combo of resources. |
