Beware Of This RD65 Stock Transfer Revenue Stamp On Ebay!

On the positive side, it is the double transfer, which is quite a scarce stamp.

On the negative side:

1. I consider this to be a perfin cancel, not a cut cancel, which is less valuable. It may not be perf initials per se, but there are holes, therefore not cut IMO.

2. It is trimmed at top.

3. It is reperfed at bottom. How do we know this? The double transfer is only found in the bottom position in the sheet of 4, meaning it should have natural straight edges at right and bottom.

It came out of the recent Matthew Bennett sale, where it realized US$330 including buyers premium.

Don't get me wrong, it's a scarce item without question, but know what you're getting into.

The number would also give away the reperf, since they were issued in panes of four. However this is not a perfin cancel, those are staple holes; calling it a cut cancel is appropriate.

I disagree, but that's ok.

With a cut cancel, paper is not actually removed from the stamp. On perfin, punch, etc., paper has actually been removed; part of the stamp is no longer present.

If you look at the high-resolution image in the listing, paper has been removed. Therefore, in terms of value and/or marketability, this is more akin to the perfin valuation than cut valuation, in my opinion.

It's actually a moot point in this specific case, as the double transfer listing in Scott only has a value for the intact stamp, not cut or perfin cancels.

I feel the value of this particular stamp is about what it brought at the auction, but that is because of the trimmed perfs at the top and the reperf at the bottom. If the staple holes were the only problem I would think $900 very fair.

Interesting in that it only claims to be an "RB9", not an RB9a (violet paper, SCV $3,500) or RB9b (green paper, SCV $12,500). There is no "RB9" catalogue number in Scott.

However, it is priced most definitely as an RB9b. Per the image, the paper has a slightly greenish hue, however anyone familiar with the 1st Issue Proprietaries knows that there is a so-called "intermediate paper" which can have a greenish appearance, but for valuation purposes falls under the category of violet paper. Exact wording from Scott:




To my eye, the paper of the stamp in question is not green enough to be an RB9b. I would not touch this stamp as an RB9b without a cert under any circumstances. Now, if seller is willing to effectively take realistic RB9a money for it, that's a different matter... but that's not what the asking price indicates.

Absolutely an RB9a. It has a black vignette. Despite what the Scott catalog says, green paper proprietaries have sepia vignettes.

I note that the RB9a has been lowered in price from $6995 to $2995, and that the RD65 listing has been removed and relisted, now mentioning the double transfer and being trimmed at the top, but NOT the reperf.
