I have some of these stamps and I was wondering if they are usable as postage. I'm not sure why the value is 7.1 cents. Maybe someone can help me with that also.
Yes, they can be used. The 'non-profit' precanceled version originally paid the rate for nonprofit third-class bulk mail pre-sorted to the 5-digit ZIP Code. http://stampsmarter.com/1847usa/198...ntifier.html Don
While there is no problem with using this particular stamp for normal postage, some of the transportation coils cannot be so used without a "precancel permit". These would be the ones labeled "BULK RATE", "PRESORTED", "NONPROFIT" & the like.
