Need Help With US $1 Patrick Henry Stamp And Strange Perfins?

Hello to all at Stamp Community. I would appreciate help with a US $1 Patrick Henry stamp that has been used and stuck on a pretty heavy paper, thus the 'perfins' cannot be easily seen from the front and impossible from the back at present. I wonder if I should soak it off or leave it alone and secondly what is this 'perfin' that is down both sides of the stamp and which I will try to describe as well as send an image. You will see the perforations all round and then the inner frames, the 'perfin' (if that's what it is) depicted as five vertical punch holes (on both sides) from the top down, with the second hole down showing another punch hole to the right on the right side and to the left on the left side. It is followed by a circle of punch holes just below on each side also, but with eight punch holes on the left side (one hole could be part of the perforation on the left, not sure) and seven punch holes on the right side. Unfortunately my knowledge on the topic of perfins is sadly lacking, so hopefully once you're able to post a picture someone may be able to assist.
