How do I choose the correct size for a mount without using a mount gauge? I asked several persons, some suggest 5 mm from each side, while others choose 2 - 3 mm from each side. Thanx.

If you go to www.globalstamps.com their price list has mount sizes posted for all sorts of different stamps. They also have a "mount scale" on same list

I personally like a 2mm border when using mounts.

Bear in mind that mounts have 2mm border top and bottom built in. So for example, if you want a 2mm border for a 20mm high stamp, you would use a 24 size mount.

I generally opt for slightly larger sizes such as 27mm instead of 25mm. Doing so fills up most out the Box.

I use about 2 mmm since it matches the border top and bottom.

We think alike, Angore. Our opinions have coincided at least five or six times, now. Weird.

For many collectors, the usual method is less likely to be mathematical than physical. Pick up a likely-sized mount from your mounts and see if the stamp fits comfortably in it. Then use the same size mount for all similar stamps.

You're half right. Since the 2mm border is built in, that means you use a 20mm mount for a 20mm high stamp. (In other words, the mount size is specified for the size of the stamp, not for the size of the stamp plus border.)
