I remember my grandfather getting me started with stamp collecting in the mid-80s. He was a quadriplegic and, therefore, needed my hands to work for him, and he also was able to share something that was important to him with his only grandchild who could appreciate the gesture at that point. I have kept a few things going through the years--my mother-in-law would bring me stamps that interested her (Elvis and Lucy). Then my daughter went to Ireland and asked me what type of keepsake I would like. I listened to other people's thoughts and her suggestions--nothing interesting. Then it hit me--stamps; what a perfect souvenir. This is when I realized that getting back into collecting would be good for me. I tend to get stressed to the point of panic attacks, so I needed to pick up a hobby that would keep my mind interested without having to move a lot. I am so excited to have found a perfect mesh of stress control, the thrill of the chase, and building something of value. (Beyond the fact that I from time to time enjoy looking through my old albums just to see the take on history at that time and the evolution of the stamps themselves.)
Wow, what a story. I hope you get much use and enjoyment from this forum. It certainly teaches me a lot and provides a welcome diversion. Compliments on your writing style, by the way.
