Inspired by Larry French's 2016 Philatelic Table of the Elements and the fact that this year is the UNESCO "International Year of the Periodic Table of Elements", I have developed a new interactive Philatelic Table of Elements. It is located here
http://stampsmarter.com/Learning/Pe...icTable.html

I created this 975 lines of code in hopes it might be a useful tool for teachers/educators/home schoolers who are seeking a different way to present the Periodic Table to students. Also good fun for stamp collectors! Click on each element to see the stamp and more details.

Well done, Don!

Last week, I asked the CheckList Coordinator at the American Topical Association to dredge-up a volunteer so that this can be released as an ATA CheckList.

It is easy to imagine variations on this theme:

- alliterations - for example, use a stamp about the Magna Carta for Magnesium, or

- denominations - use a stamp with a denomination that matches the atomic number of each element.

For extra credit, try to get stamps of a similar color/shade for each column of the periodic table.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

Thanks. I was thinking about developing a set of album pages for this too; currently on the 'to do' list. Note that finding stamps that are applicable to some of the rarer (or 'useless') elements is pretty difficult, I had to reach for 'uses' or a geographic relationship on some elements.
Don

Edit: I talked to the Chem13 News folks before starting, the original work was done by Larry French and presented at the 2016 American Chemical Society National Meeting in San Diego.

Very cool. Two comments: 1, I didn't know that the elements from about 107 on had actual names, because earlier on when most of them were only proposed and hadn't actually been produced in nuclear reactors or whatever had "names" based only on their atomic number, and 2, by an interesting coincidence, I was looking at it while listening to the Puzzle on NPR's Sunday morning show. At the very moment I was looking at it, puzzle master Will Shortz was asking a contestant a true or false question: is tin the only three letter name on the periodic table? A quick glance over the table allowed me to see that it was true faster than the contestant was able to give his reply and before Will was able to confirm that it was true.

Baby steps, Will, baby steps.

First you have to request a HiRes image from

The file they will send you is a PowerPoint file. Here is their PowerPoint file converted to a jpg
http://stampsmarter.com/Learning/pe...chTable2.jpg

The conversion yields a 3000 x 1929 file size, not sure that this resolution would be able to generate a nice looking poster. But if you take it to a print shop and get one made, let us know how it turns out.

That must have taken about three lifetimes to make. You know, and I'm serious about this, a lot of scientists, science teachers, and students (as well as lowly stamp collectors) would love to buy a nice large poster version of this. Assuming it doesn't violate someone's copyright, of course, which it probably does if you try to sell it. Very nice job. Marie Curie died of radiation poisoning. Just wanted to brighten up your day with that fact.

For Promethium (which has the coolest name), you have:

Bohuslav Branner predicted this element but could be [sic] isolate it. I think you meant "could not isolate it"?

Took me about 20 man hours or one week sitting in dialysis. I'll look into generating a poster, since what I did is an original work I own the copyright for the one on Stamp Smarter.

As a Stage 4 cancer patient, there is virtually no hope of a transplant for me. While some cancer patients can get a organ transplant if they stay cancer free for 5 or more years, I am faced with a different situation. My cancer was put into remission (for now) using one of the new immunotherapy drugs. Immunotherapy basically stimulates your own immune system to attack the cancer cells.

But when you get an organ transplant, they have to give you a slew of immunosuppressant drugs to stop your immune system from attacking and rejecting the new organ. There is a strong chance that if I got an organ transplant and took the immunosuppressant drugs, the cancer would come roaring back.

At this point, no one really knows exactly what might happen to a patient in my position, nor is anyone really willing to risk precious organs when there are plenty of other patients who do not have the same complications.

No matter, I am vertical and I am dressed so all is good.
Don

Edit; I've looked into printing posters. For smaller quantities order (like <25) a 36" x 24" poster printed on good, glossy paper, the cost would be $18.50 each plus shipping. If 6 or more people respond in this thread that they would be interested in these posters I will do the work, order the posters, and offer them at my cost.
