I recently purchased a complete set of #3182-3191 Celebrate the Century Stamps because I am a history buff and admire the esthetics of these stamps. Since I just commenced stamp collecting about 7 months ago, I am unaware of the history, promotion, fanfare, mass appeal popularity etc., of certain stamp issues with the exception of the 29c Elvis stamp that was all over the news in 1993.
The back of each sheet mentions these were "limited edition" although that term is used loosely by those in marketing/advertising. How limited were these stamps during their release in the late 1990s and were they popular among stamp collectors or the general public? At the time of their release and presently, do people mainly purchase sheets of this series that corresponded to the decade they have an affinity for or do people mainly purchase complete sets?
Most/many would buy the complete set of ten. They are selling for below face value on ebay. Sc 3182 -3187 quantity 12,533,000 each. 3188 quantity 8,000,000 3189-3190 quantity 6,000,000 each 3191 quantity 8,250,000 3192 quantity 30,000,000
