Some More 3 Cent Washingtons

Given my cataracts and horrible sense of color, these 3 cent Washingtons are confusing. Probably not so much for you folks out there with good eyesight and better knowledge. The stamp on the right has been expertized by PSAG as a 10A. The stamp on the left has no cert and looks like a Type II also with an inner line, but the color seems different. Just a normal color variation since I have no idea what it would be otherwise? Thank you again.

The one on the left is an 11A. These stamps came in a rainbow of colors. If it isn't orange brown, it is an 11 or 11A. Your 11A looks like a claret shade.

Asking members about colour ink for U.S. stamp printings....was it 'prepared/mixed daily' or 'one batch' mixed & used daily for entire stamp issue, in that era ?

For this issue, you can tell when the stamp was printed by the color. . .of course figuring out the color is difficult. Carroll Chase put together a color chart in the 1930s that is the basis for identifying colors today. Orange Brown shades are from 1851. Brownish Carmine are from 1852 or 1856. Claret shades are from 1852 or 1857. Dull Red (which is the color indicated for 11/11A in Scott) were only printed in 1853. Rose Red shades are from 1853-4. Orange Red shades are from 1855. Rose Brown and Yellow Brown are from 1857. There are other shades too. I dont think you can very well figure out a color without references or experience. Amos put out a color guide with color chips. I have one and frankly don't think it is terribly useful.

In fact, going back to a 1910 catalog there was no listing for a #25 either - it was designated as a type I. Type II was everything else.
