First off, huge thank you to Shermae; now have a big envelope full of mostly tabbed Israeli stamps. Really looking forward to digging in and identifying/learning all about them.
Looking for suggestions on literature not just to identify them, but also to gain some background and knowledge.
Bale Catalogue of Israel. This is the latest edition I could find a picture of. This will be hard to find and pricey. Out of print and the company sold to a guy in Israel. He still produces other specialized catalogues pertaining to Israel but read titles carefully. Used earlier edition can be found but catalogue pricing will be off but info good.
Besides the Bale and Carmel catalogs already mentioned I can recommend the following: Mosden (2 volumes) Gershon Simon's Livni Encyclopedia
Most, if not all of these, are out of print but you can borrow them from APRL.
The Israel Ministry of Posts also publishes a yearly catalog. In some of these editions the text on the tabs is translated into English.
Check out the Philatelic Union Catalog for 264 references to Israel philately (and thousands of entries for philately in general.)
You can also check the Society of Israel Philatelists website which has several reference books for sale. "Basic Israel Philately" is worthwhile.
Some auction catalogs are so comprehensive they are a reference work in their own right. For example, Siegel Sale 1184 June 20, 2018 is worth downloading. David Feldman Geneva also had a good auction catalog from 2015.
I should also add that another excellent reference is "The Running Stag" by Meir Persoff. This book provides the historical background of why and how the stamps were issued.
