This one-cent Thomas Jefferson Postal Card issue of 1886, Scott UX9, was mailed to St. Mary's, Pennsylvania in 1888. Note that the addressee's name is handstamped 'Marien Baxter,' and that the double-circle county date stamp at right is from 'Baxter, Jefferson Co., PA.'
What we know so far:
St. Mary's is in Elk, Pennsylvania.
The USPS Postmaster Finder website has no hits for either St. Mary's or for Elk or for Baxter. There is a hit for 'Jefferson, PA' (the town) but no PM named Baxter.
The hand-written message verso is of a personal nature ("My Dear Children").
So...Is there a connection between the addressee and the PO name found on the dcds? Any Pennsylvania postal historians out there that might know?
