USPS Airmail Shirt With Image Of Russian Plane

Today's Washington Post has a column about the USPS selling a commemorative US airmail t-shirt with an illustration of a Russian Tu-114 (the passenger version of the Tu-95 "Bear" bomber), apparently instead of a DC-4. The t-shirt also says "United States Post Service" rather than "Postal Service." The USPS says its private third-party vendor selected a "stock image." The USPS has removed the t-shirts from sale.

Darn Russians are everywhere.

The contra-rotating propellers are a kind of giveaway. The Russians used those a lot on their piston-driven planes.

This reminds me of a similar mistake a few elections ago. The Democrats created a poster to honor veterans. The poster included an image of Russian warships. Doh!

This is the USSR stamp with Tu-114, 1958 (SU 2149). Also there is the imperf variant.
