Papua has gone through several name changes. After their first encounter with New Guinea in 1511, the Portuguese named the island "Ilhas dos Papuans" ("Island of the Fuzzy Haired"), using the Malay word papuwah. Early Dutch explorers called it New Guinea because the black inhabitants reminded them of the blacks that lived in Guinea in western Africa and later called the western half Dutch New Guinea. http://factsanddetails.com/indonesi...ry-4032.html
