Louise411...It's one thing to get a valuation on a stamp but it's an entirely different ballgame proving it genuine. Warwick and Warwick may indeed have several stamp experts working for them but, most collectors would not trust their word alone on a rare and expensive stamp. Also, being located in the UK, their experts would have very little experience with identifying the majority of the truly rare US issues. For that, you would need to go to the true experts in this type of material: APEX, PF or PSE. If you will notice, most of the stories involving a truly rare find begin with the finder sending the stamp to the appropriate experts for a certificate, not to an auction house for a valuation. |

I assume that most auction houses would offer what W&W is offering, which is basically an opinion likely to be of two parts: this is a rough CV for your collection; and this is what it's likely to achieve at auction (or what we'd offer you if buying it in). With individual, scarce stamps, W&W's view wouldn't carry the same weight as an ROSL certificate, but it would have some force because the auction house has to stand behind its judgment of genuineness and condition of single-stamp lots. |

Quote: Don...how was it that you came into possession of your #423B? I found it in a large US accumulation I purchased out of the Netherlands. The stamp was not identified and I tossed it aside after gauging the perforations thinking it was an attempt at an altered compound perf stamp. Don |

More than anything else, I equate "rare stamp" to monetary value.

Going to parrot Shermae; but I'm still searching after 6 months for some Philippines stamps that are in the SCV $1-8 range or even less; and can't find them. Anywhere. It is like they don't exist.
So rare is a relative term in that sense.
There is a thread an another forum with some guy called pklee355, (If my memory serve me correctly) who seems to have found every variety of rare US stamp ever. Might want to talk to him/her. For a laugh.... |

Several years ago I heard the following as a definition of a rare stamp:
A stamp is rare if you want to buy it and you have the money in your hand, but you can't.
There are many expensive stamps which are not rare by this definition.

Check ebay... there are lots vendors that sell only very rare and extremely rare stamps. Even if the stamps have only a minimal catalogue value they are always listed as very rare and extremely rare stamps. Some of the vendors even offer these gems for only a hundred time catalogue. A REAL Bargain. Got to LOVE ebay. |
