Gibbons has 2 major shades for the earlier 1882-88 stamp, deep blue-green and blue-green. The scan seems to be brighter than the actual, but I'm pretty sure A and B belong in that range (so Scott 36). Gibbons has 2 major shades for the later 1900 stamp, pale yellow-green and yellow-green and I feel confident that C is the first major shade (so Scott 56).
tks hy-brasil. I need to get to the library and look at a gibbons cat. Intrigued now about the varying degrees of info between different catalogues....
Gibbons says they keep some old color names intact for continuity or somesuch, and I suspect that Scott also has not revised the color names for these earlier Indian stamps and others in many, many years.
Like Gibbons, Scott produced their own color guide, but it might have been a one-shot deal. Gibbons's color guide is pretty useful and continues to be available -- not cheap. Scott's is no longer sold, for whatever reason. Collectors balking at the cost may have been a factor. But there might have been the realization that all Scott's entries would have to be reviewed and possibly redone if their color guide caught on.
