Intentionally not mentioning any names here but the results are current worldwide data on stamp sales and inquiries albeit from a single data source. It's not close to what I would have expected. Thoughts from anyone else?

In the absence of context, it is difficult to draw any conclusions. For example, if the company marketing was targeting a particular demographic. I am also a bit confused as to the combining of 'sales' and 'inquires', these are two business variables at are not typically merged into a single data set.
Metrics like this are numeric generalizations. And like any generalization, you really need a lot of contextual information to be able to draw meaningful conclusions. Don |

Not only that, but what is the sample size? "Worldwide data" of what? If it's a high-traffic site with thousands of visitors daily, that's much more meaningful than many hobby/niche sites who may get less than 50 visits a day.
In other words, the smaller the sample size, the greater the possibility of outliers skewing the data, and the less meaningful the numbers are. |

Quote: I know - who uses desktops!? I just love desktops, wouldn't have any other. Been waiting for a sale on Lenovo desktop now for over a year. Big discounts on Gamers, tablets and Laptops all the time.....desktops remain rusted on at the same price......weird. |

Would definitely be interested to see the sample size, and if this was world-wide, or just in the US, or any other given country. |

The computer comment has caught my eye!
Yep! I am also going to change over to a desk top computer system with 2 screen being like 2 different computers with the 1 mouse!
At present am using 2 laptops. Finding it hard to keep a laptop working for 2 years!
edit: forgot an ! mark! |

In this context, you can assume that "desktop" encompasses both desktops and laptops. A website, which is where the stats probably come from, is almost certainly unable to be able to differentiate between the two. Mobile refers to smartphones and tablet of course to tablets. Clive

In my opinion tablets are mobile devices; I am unsure how these are defined in the metric shown above. Websites can determine a user's operating system and version, browser type and version, and their screen resolution. Web developers really only care about a users screen resolution; whether the device is a desktop vs. laptop or a smart phone vs. a tablet does not really matter. http://whatismyscreenresolution.net/Don |

51studebaker - the metric (I presume), like all websites uses what is called the useragent string. This is a value the browser passes to web sites over http requests, identifying what type of browser is requesting data. Technically this can be spoofed with a plugin, but typically is accurate. Laptops and desktops are the same, since the browser version is the same on either.
On tablets, since they run IOS, Android or blackberry they will correspond to a mobile useragent identifiable string
Type this question into Google: what is my user agent |

Interesting!
The desktop is a new word for me.
Normally I would refer to a desktop here as a tower. |

What I found most interesting in the data was the age groups. Over 77% of the 5,000 queries from 62 countries are from age group 44 and under. |

Given that the data are so contrary to expectation, isn't that good reason to think they are worthless? There's no way 50% of stamp collectors are female, and only 10% 55 or over? |

I propose that the original poster identify the source of this survey, along with the URL so we can all see the original information.
If he is not willing to do so, I propose that the Admin close the thread. We're wasting bytes debating an unknown. |
