in my Scott Classic (world) there is a listing for Switzerland called 88c (1Fr claret) while there is also a listing for 87c (1Fr claret). I guess the 88c is an error?
wmk 182 (I), 1891-1903, perf. 11.5x11, white paper.
yes, they are the staying Helvetia design both, and if I see it correct and looking at Michel the normal-prized 87c is correct and the 88c very expensive listing in Scott is wrong.
A misprint for sure. By Scott's own system, 88 is the 3fr value. Therefore, 88a, 88b, 88c, etc. must be 3fr values also. By the price of Scott 88c, it can only be the 3fr watermark type I, perf 11.5x11.
There were a lot of omissions by Scott for the longest time for the Standing Helvetias, accounting for the -a, -b, -c confusing additions over time. The relatively recent split of the watermark into the two types already recognized by other catalogs accounts for Scott playing catch up and adding more "varieties". I think it would have been better to renumber the Standing Helvetias.
My 2016 Scott has the first issue as perf 11.5-11.75. These are dead-on perf 11.75, if you have a gauge that can measure that (like the Scott/Linn's one!). I also think they would be more readily mistaken for a nonexistent perf 12 all around, if anything.
