I recently upgraded a couple of these and added the 547a ($2 Lake and Black). I like the shade variety of the 517 (50c Perf 11) - the two 517s actually look different. . .the perf varieties barely look different, and the watermark varieties look identical. I have updated all my album pages to show "varieties" of stamps without regard for whether Scott gave the stamps major numbers, minor numbers, mentioned the variety, or are unlisted varieties. This lets me collect whatever I want, and lets me ignore rarities. I can someday have a "complete" US collection this way - I only leave spots for stamps I want to get (and think I have a chance at finding/buying someday). I know that the $2 and $5 Franklins are not strictly 3rd Bureau, but I think they belong here more than with the 4th Bureau. Sorry about the low resolution. . .this is the best I can do for 200kb.

Very nice. Your philosophy of placing stamps is similar to what I have started to do on a more modest scale. |

Really terrific work. Now you got me thinking about organizing parts of my collection along the same lines. |

Fabulous stamps and presentation!
I do have a question
Do you make the page up after you accumulate every stamp you want for the page? Or do you occasionally leave blank spots for varieties that you have not obtained yet?
For instance Scott 518 perf 11 unwkm comes as 518 (violet brown) and 518b (deep brown)

I leave spots for stamps I definitely want, but if I come across something new, I redo the page. I end up remounting stamps a lot. I am a little afraid of damaging them by handling them so much, but I've gotten pretty good with mounts.
For example, I'm redoing my banknotes to allow for double paper and continental grill varieties.
Color varieties are really tough to plan for. Some issues are VERY hard, like the 3c 1861s. |

This makes a lot of sense in terms of an overview of what the USPS was doing, and also makes for a great presentation. Quite nice. |

I'm going to combine the "little bank notes" of 1890 with the 1st bureau issues like this too. They are the same stamps with minor design changes and a new printer. I always think it is awkward to group the 1890s with the rest of the banknotes. |
