Dear community, please can you have a look at these two versions on 1885 King Oscar 2 Stamps Sc. #39. They seem very different to me - are they the same stamp at all? Best regards, Sam

Your two stamps are from the 1886 printings(Facit 45).Posthorn on the back. There are two types of paper and 4 shades. 1)Plain white paper (Facit 45a,45b,45c) (your left stamp)Violet carmine, pale violet carmine, carmine. 2)yellowish paper (Facit 45d).(your right stamp)Printings on the yellowih paper are often blurry and the shade is a Pink Carmine that has a dirty look to it. So technicaly they are not the same stamp….. |

My take on this is that the stamp on the left is either Scott 39, dull rose, issue date of 1885 or Scott 45, pink, issue date of 1886. And the stamp on the right is a totally different design(see Rod's post), Scott 58, issue date of 1891. The second stamp is one of a set of 10 stamps, with 9 different denominations. |

I am also trying to work through my oscars :) I love them. I believe I have a Scott 39 maybe a 58. Of the 4 I feature (in the 10 ore) only the first has the posthorn the three remaining do not. I am just getting used to my Scott Specialized Catalogue so I could be missing something - to me the colors all look different. Also sharing my Oscar Page - :) |

If the first has no posthorn, it's 39. The next two are 45. There shades of these. The last is 58. The numerals differ, and so does the rendition of the king's head. Carry on! |

Your'e doing fine As Geoff has explained, the 1872 v the 1891 Tip: Next purchase for you, a cheap battery lit Magnifying Glass, you get to see your stamps up close and personal. A colleague and I were flyspecking Kangaroo stamps, and , at a loss for words, said "Pass me the submarine" aka magnifying glass. It is now always referred to as the submarine. ( ebay circa $4) |

Thank Rod. Yes I have an LED Magnifying glass - but the light went out. Sometimes with a vey heavy cancel I have a hard time even with the magnifying glass.
I also have just started using the Scott Catalog that I purchased - it is the 2000 version. With practice I will get better and better. |

Mrita, consider this, every query, every puzzle, every question, most of us have had, just like you, in our own journey. That's what makes it a family. To quote Buzz Lightyear : "To infinity, and beyond! ........." Apologies for the gunky magnifier...(Printer toner)
